Hanging of the Greens

by Joanna Davis on November 13, 2025

We are soon going to share in one of my favorite worship services of the year, Hanging of the Greens.  On Sunday, November 30th at 6 p.m. in our sanctuary, we will participate in a celebration of preparation as we join together in decorating the church for the Advent and Christmas season.

Why is it called Advent?  The word "Advent" comes from the Latin word “adventus,” meaning "arrival" or "coming," and signifies the season of waiting and anticipation for the birth of Jesus.  Hanging of the Greens is a traditional Christian ceremony on the first Sunday of Advent that helps us to begin preparing our hearts for our coming Lord.

What will you experience at Hanging of the Greens? There is a sense of pure joy in the room as the children carry in the décor, as we sing Christmas music together, and as we hear the reading of scripture and the narrative of the meaning and significance of each decoration.

If you have never attended Hanging of the Greens, let me encourage you to come this year.  If, like me, you look forward to this time every year, I encourage you to invite someone to come with you. Share the joy!
