The season of harvest is upon us! Now is one of those times to expect a harvest for what you have sown. For as long as humans have sown seed and gathered the harvest, the metaphor of sowing and reaping has been ingrained in our culture. You’ve heard the phrase, you reap what you sow, implying a sort of universal return on your actions and behaviors.
Yet, I believe there are several Spiritual Laws at play, with one of those being the Law of Sowing and Reaping. This precept is found throughout scripture.
God even established holidays around the seasons of sowing and reaping. (Leviticus 23) Jesus told parables about sowing seeds for the Kingdom of God. (Mark 4:3–9, Mark 4:26–29, Mark 4:26–29, and more!) And Paul used this same metaphor. (1 Corinthians 9:11, 2 Corinthians 9:6)
There are all kinds of harvests. They grow according to the seeds planted. They are spiritual, physical, relational, emotional, and financial. Today, let’s focus on that last one. In 2 Corinthians 9:6, we read, “What I mean is this: the one who sows a small number of seeds will also reap a small crop, and the one who sows a generous amount of seeds will also reap a generous crop.” (CEB)
Paul is specifically talking about generosity and encouraging people to give to the church. He’s teaching us that those who give generously will receive generously. Here’s the thing, in scripture, finances are a placeholder for whatever good, services, or benefits we need or seek. So, if you have sown generously, my prayer is that you reap generously whatever you need and seek from God.
Many of you have given generously – thank you! You have sown generously – thank you! Regardless of the timing of your donations or the amount of your gifts, I sincerely pray over your giving and that you follow what you have prayerfully discerned. Thank you! Every gift matters. This was recently proven when many people gave above and beyond so we could fix our sign and get new buses. Thank you!
Earlier this year you probably wrote a love letter to God. In that letter, you made a commitment to God and yourself about how you want to grow this year in your discipleship, in service, and in your giving. It’s time to send that letter back to you. Remember, this letter has never been opened. It is a letter created by you, for your review only, to be used to help you reach your prayerfully discerned goals.
Enclosed with this letter, if you have given this year, you will find your giving for the year from January 1 through August 31, 2026. Please remember that if you gave a prepaid donation late last year or if you sent a donation after August 31st of this year, it will not be on this statement. If you are new or did not participate in the Love Letters to God, I pray that you will find ways to partner with us in gratitude in the coming months and years. However you are involved, I am thankful for your prayers, presence, gifts, service, and witness of Christ’s love.
In a deeply profound and good way, I am very proud of you. I am grateful for your love and commitment to this wonderful church. I pray that when you receive your Love Letter back that you are encouraged in your commitment to God and personal discipleship to Jesus. As we look forward to the next season, may we harvest generously because we have sown generously.
